Anatolіi Shakhrai was born in the village of Horodyshche of the Zhytomyr region in the family of a peasant. In 1951, he, jointly with his mother and brother Vitaliy (his father died in the war), moved to Zhytomyr. In Zhytomyr, the artist visited an art studio at the House of Folk Art. In the period from 1961 to 1963, Shakhrai was in the Soviet Army; afterwards, he worked as an artist-decorator. In 1965 he entered Ivan Fedorov Ukrainian Printing Institute (Lviv) and studied at the Faculty of Graphics with the specialization on "book decorations and illustration". Graduated in 1971. From 1967 Shakhrai worked in Zhytomyr Art and Production Workshops, creating mosaic panels, paintings, works in the marquetry technique, as well as embossing and carving. In 1990, Anatolіi received the specialization on the monumental and decorative. His brother Vitalii was also an artist; after the graduation from Odessa Art College, he worked with brother in Zhytomyr Art and Production Workshops.
